Guest Article - The Benefits of Distance Education in Cosmetology
Hi everyone,
I was recently contacted by Jameson Carney, a "20-something, make-up artist and culture fanatic from the mid-west", who expressed an interest in writing an article for Balanced Mary Kay. A dialog began between us and the result was the following article.
Here, Jameson presents and excellent argument for, and brief description of, gaining a degree in cosmetology as a means of enhancing a Mary Kay business. For those that complain that Mary Kay does not train enough, this presents a wonderful way of being proactive in enhancing your own knowledge base.
Jameson, thank you so much for your interest and informative article.
-----
The Benefits of Distance Education in Cosmetology
Although distance education is often lauded as being a cheaper, more convenient way to earn a certification or degree, it often seems impractical to study certain fields, such as cosmetology. While practical experience makes up a large amount of cosmetology training, there are still plenty of benefits that one in this field can gain from studying online.
Prepare for Your Licensing Exam
A license is often required for careers in the field of cosmetology and in order to obtain your license you must complete a written and practical exam. Distance education allows you to take courses designed to help you refresh your knowledge of cosmetology before taking your licensing exam. These refresher courses are short and can be completed in your spare time, making it easier to juggle your professional life with your education.
How Cosmetology Courses Work Online
It is also possible for an aspiring cosmetologist to receive his or her certification solely through online courses. Cosmetology schools online use video instructions to help demonstrate techniques to students while simultaneously teaching cosmetology theory. What an online cosmetology program lacks in practical experience in makes up for in price and convenience, however students are encouraged to seek out additional hands-on training via apprenticeship or internship programs if possible. If you do decide to study cosmetology online, be sure to stick to an accredited school so there are no issues down the road.
Get Into the Business of Cosmetology
The best benefit that distance education can offer you is the opportunity to advance your
career into a management position or help you start up your own salon or other business in the field of cosmetology. While beauty school might teach you how to properly style hair, apply makeup or perform nail work, you won't learn any of the business aspects of the beauty and cosmetic industry. Distance education makes it possible for you to study entrepreneurship, business administration or management in your spare time while you attend cosmetology school or after you have begun to work in the industry.
The field of cosmetology also extends beyond salons and stylists and includes those that supply these salons and their customers with their beauty supplies. Mary Kay has thrived as a company for 44 years by allowing those with a passion for cosmetology and an entrepreneurial spirit to do what they love for a living by giving them the means to start their own business. While many Mary Kay representatives find great success in their work, there are also those who struggle at first to find their customer base.
There are several online programs that can help you to become a better salesperson and business owner. Through online marketing courses you can learn how to advertise your product and learn strategies on how to attract potential customers. Online entrepreneurial programs give you the training you need to learn all of the aspects of starting up and running your own business. Taking courses in financing through distance education can help you to learn how to create a budget and file taxes for your business. You could even study biology, chemistry and dermatology courses to learn more about the components of cosmetics and beauty products and how they help to reduce the signs of aging, conceal blemishes and clear up skin.
Whether you decide to attend one of the accredited online cosmetology schools or pursue business education online, distance education can help you to achieve your career goals without having to pay high tuition fees or work classes into your busy schedule. Courses and tests are administered online at a schedule that is the most convenient for you, whether that's early in the morning or in the middle of the night. Really though, the best aspect of distance education is the ability to take classes on cosmetology without having to change out of your pajamas, comb your hair or put on makeup.
Jameson Carney is a 20-something, make-up artist and culture fanatic from the mid-west. In his free time you will find him traveling the world and advocating for online education.

Balanced readers, please welcome Jameson and leave a comment or question for him.
Thanks,

Unto us a son is given!
My son! Leonidas Abram, Born at 10.06am on December 16, 2010
7 pounds 8 ounces, 19 3/4 inches!
Just thought I would stop by to share the love!
I may not be around to answer questions, so:
Yes, we are excited, thrilled, amazed and every other wonderful emotion.
Yes, mommy is doing good. She delivered all natural (no epidural) and is recovering at the expected pace.
Yes, he is eating and sleeping very well and from all indications is very healthy.
I will be around, but if I don't answer right away, it is probably because I am spending time with my son!
Thanks in advance for all the oohs and aahs!

A little about Mary Kay
Thanksgiving. What a glorious time of the year! It's a time to step back and take stock of how truly blessed we are. It's a time to come together around the table to enjoy good food, friends and family from near and far. Thanksgiving also is a time when we pause to remember with special fondness our Founder, Mary Kay Ash.
Of all of the holidays throughout the year, Thanksgiving was Mary Kay's favorite. She especially enjoyed preparing the Thanksgiving meal and spending meaningful time with her family. We believe it's no coincidence that Mary Kay passed away on Thanksgiving Day in 2001. What a special day to enter the gates of Heaven!
There are so many qualities that we admire about this amazing woman. But one which stands out among others was her joy in giving. There could not be a more appropriate time than now to honor Mary Kay's legacy with a tribute gift to The Mary Kay FoundationSM whose mission is to eliminate cancer and to end the epidemic of violence against women.
If you would like to join us in a special tribute to honor Mary Kay and her legacy, please click here or visit the Mary Kay Ash tribute page at www.marykayfoundation.org.
On behalf of The Mary Kay FoundationSM, may God bless you and yours this holiday season.
Warmest wishes,
Michael Lunceford
President, The Mary Kay Foundation

A Veteran's Story
This is a true story from someone I know and as I read it and the tears streamed down my face, I just had to pass it on. We often get so hung up on little things, that often important things slip by. This is not about MK - it is just about life. I hope it moves you as much as it moved me. Personally, I have one son in Afghastan now and one on the way.
and.. thank you to all our service men and woman who risk their lives every day to insure ours. God Bless you and your family.
I had a opportunity about 2 months ago to welcome back a young marine who stepped on a IED in Afghanistan. He was from Jacksonville Florida. His father picked him up from Walter Reed hospital and drove him back to his home in Jacksonville. He lost his left leg above the knee, his right leg, and his left arm. His name was Tyler Southern.
I heard about his return through the local media. As a former military veteran I felt the need to welcome this young man home. There were about 700 to 1000 motorcycles present at the Ga/ FL welcome center. Everyone at the welcome home event waved an American Flag. I had a new U.S.S FLORIDA hat that I bought from the ships store of the U.S.S Florida while it we being repaired at our repair facility here at Kings Bay Naval Base. I took off a few hours from work that day and drove to the GA/FL welcome center. It was quite a site to see. Old glory was everywhere..
His father pulled into the welcome center with Tyler. He had his wheel chair in the back of the truck. He stopped right in front of me. His windows were tinted very dark. Tyler rolled down his window and had had the biggest smile on his face. I handed him the hat from the submarine U.S.S. Florida and a small American Flag. He gave me hug saying " Thank you", I replied "no thank you for your service and god bless you" . He replied "I have one good arm for hugging ", he then gave me another hug with his one remaining limb. If anyone is fortunate to experience something like this we need to realize what our veterans really do for us.
As a veteran of our armed forces I felt it my privilege and duty to welcome home this young man who so proudly served his country. He and his family will have a tough road ahead. With all our thoughts and prayers I hope he and all have been injured will be blessed.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
GOD BLESS all our Vets and Military

Interesting - Allison Lamar & Bellamora
I must admit this is pretty interesting, I guess either her vision to be a motivational speaker didn't work quite as well as she hoped or this was in the works before she left Mary Kay and that was her reason for leaving because the money must have been very attractive. Allison's title with the Company is Corporate Trainer - interestingly enough... the Company's Values & Principles sound like she just was repeating from her Mary Kay time..
From what I have looked at so far, it is a new direct sale, mlm stye skin care company but it is not cheap.

It's November & Christmas is Coming!!
Where does the time go? It feels like we just started 2010 and here we are in November already. So.... do we have to "adjust" the way we do things this time of year? My answer is "yes". Actually if you wait too much longer, you probably find yourself not doing much Mary Kay over the holidays. Not only can we have great Holiday Open Houses, but we can be booking for Holiday Party Glamour and even booking out past the new year with a "New Look for a New Year". But if you wait until mid December, it will tougher to get the bookings.
If you are out of leads, in our area from October thru Christmas, all over there are Holiday Craft Fairs. These events very reasonably priced so it is a great place to set up a Mary Kay table and do a drawing where people can register for a complimentary skin care presentation and color appointment. When doing these events, beside a display of our products, I also put together a few gift ideas for display only (we can not sell our products at this type of event, but we can take orders if someone does not have a consultant or book them for an appointment or follow up at a later date.
It might be hard to tell how well you did at any of these events until you follow up. Two weeks ago, I did a Holiday Home Party Business Expo. The event cost me $25 for my spot and was only 4 hours long. The event coordinator had not advertised heavily enough and there were several other events going on the same day so turnout was extremely low. I only ended up with three leads, I am sure many may have been extremely disappointed with only 3 leads but.........
of the three I have held appointments with two of them and both first sales were over $100 and both started on the skin care and plan on staying with it, and one introduced me to her husband and handed him my card and told him since he never knew what to get her for Christmas, to just give me a call because I had a "VERY LONG"
Wish List and 2 days later called and ordered several more pieces that we had ried at her appointmetn). So for a few hours (and fun with the other vendors) I would say that it was certainly worth my time. And every time my new clients reorder, I will continue to be "paid" for my time.
So share with your clients how you can assist them in their holiday shopping and you can help make sure she gets items off her wish list items, and you can offer to make sure that everyone has a great look for any Holiday parties that they may be attending, and get those "New Year, New Look NEW Year" appointments on the books!!
More to come on getting thru this time of the year but hopefully this has given you a few ideas to run with!!
Stay tuned!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN BALANCED READERS!!
I want to take a minute to wish all of our readers a Happy, Fun, and Safe Halloween. I have been absolutely swamped with personal stuff including health issues of family members that have requied my time and attention. Because of the flexibility of my Mary Kay business, I have been able to be where I WANT to be (not need) to be without taking time off. Yes, I have had to work around the other things I need to take care of but I can schedule my appointments around the other items and I can still come home to orders on the answering machine and email orders. It does pay to work your MK as a business whether you are doing it just part time or full time.
And I will return so hang on just for a little bit longer - I do have a post in my head just want to take the time to write it well and not just throw it up but soon, I promise... at least I don't do "reruns, lol"

Brand Keys
Mary Kay Tops Consumer Loyalty List in New National Survey
Dallas - October 12, 2010 - It seems that women can't live without makeup, but apparently women can't live without their Mary Kay® makeup.
Mary Kay ranked number one among all cosmetic brands in consumer loyalty according to the 2010 Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index. Additionally, Mary Kay achieved the number 12 position on Brand Keys Top Loyalty Leaders List which ranks consumer loyalty among the 518 brands assessed. That list also includes other well-known brand names like Apple iPhone, Amazon and Google. Mary Kay also ranked number one in consumer loyalty in two categories: cosmetics (mass merchandiser) and moisturizing skincare (mass merchandiser). This is the third year that Mary Kay has ranked on the Brand Keys Top Loyalty Leaders List.
The annual Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Winners are those brands best able to engage consumers and create loyal customers. Initiated in 1997, the Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index is fielded annually in the spring and fall. The current index examines customers' relationships with 518 brands in 71 categories. For detailed information on this year's ranking visit, http://www.brandkeys.com/awards/leaders.cfm
"We are honored to be recognized for brand loyalty, but we are not surprised," said Yvette Franco, Mary Kay Inc.'s Vice President of U.S. Marketing. "Our brand has loyal consumers because Mary Kay has great products. Whatever a woman wants in her skincare and cosmetics, we have it. From the 20-year-old woman who wants a natural, beautiful look to the 50-something woman who wants to fight the signs of aging; we are focused on addressing the needs of all women. We have what she wants. We believe the personalized service offered by the Mary Kay independent sales force combined with Mary Kay's high-quality products are the two reasons that consumers are loyal to our brand."

Mary Kay in Seventeen Magazine!!
Just dropping in for a quick minute... but how cool is this??

Men like it too
Even if they won't admit it in public, men are using and liking plenty of the women's MK products on the sly. ;)
I still have a bit of red tea/fig body scrub (help! I am running out!) I beckoned a certain friend into the shower and exfoliated his back with it. Oh, that was a happy camper. He wants more. I have enough left for about 2 showers. Sadly, the sugar scrubs are a bit too scratchy for me... MK4ME, got any of the other scrubs left, the ones you were selling over the summer? If not, do any of you other consultants on here have any?
(Yes, I *know* I'm a bad girl. lol. That's how I roll!)

The light at the end of the tunnel
Well, people, I've finally completed the moving process. I'm still digging out from under a huge pile of work (all 3 jobs have hit me with tight deadlines at once) but at least I will never have to step foot into my ex's filthy house again, and I have no more boxes to carry. I've bought almost all the furnishings I need, save for 2 more chairs, a coffee grinder, and a microwave when I get around to it.
Once I get paid for the big thick books I've proofread, I can see what goodies MK has to offer me. I haven't been able to buy *any* makeup in like 3 months now, which has gotten pretty depressing, 'cause I'm close to running out of some staples.
My new apartment is at the very limit of what I can afford, but it's quiet, clean, safe, spacious, and beautiful. And it will stay that way, because I am a neat and clean girl who takes pride in her home. No consultant would shudder to step across my threshold.
How are y'all doing?

A Question for our Readers??
I would really love your feedback and comments, (not that it will change my mind once I make it up) but hey.... let me hear you... we are re qualifying for our MK car... sorry all but with our parents health (on both sides of our family) I have decided no matter what, until things settle down, I do not want to be dealing with Cadillac production, I am taking Premier Club so I don't even have to worry about production. (Next qualification will be different) but I feel our parents raised us and now it is our turn to help them out... (of course... it has to be all of them at once, and they have all been super independent until this year...but hey...)
Today while out doing my errands, I spied my dream car... I have had several 'stangs in years past and have always loved them and red, my fav..... I saw this and oh my, I gave myself whiplash checking it out. At premier club level, we have the choice to select the Toyota Camry, Chevy Equinox or $500 a month cash.. After drooling all the way home.... I can't get that car out of my mind. Perhaps it is empty nest syndrome or a midlife crisis or something and I am going to think it thru but...
how would you feel if you were in my unit and I opted for the cash and bought my little red 'stang?
I really don't care whether other directors think I don't have a MK car anymore than I expect them to think more of me because I do. I have to admit that driving the "Pink" CTS has been fun... but it can also be a .. hmm a bit of an inconvenience if I just want to be incognito and blend in with everyone else. Let's face it, it stands out and everyone notices it and usually makes wonderful comments. Just being shy, on occasion, it can get a little uncomfortable.
But... I would like to know if you were in my unit, how would you feel, do you think it would bother you for your director not to have a "MK Car" as long as MK was paying for it??
Give me your feedback, please!! Thanks

Closing Placemat
Hi Everyone!!
I was asked about my closing.. only have a minute, so here is the placemat I am currently. I will share more soon.
The most important thing about a closing during a party is to always remember to do a group "table" closing and then take two minutes to speak with each guest individually. This makes it personally and you can find out what the client wants that night, in the future, likes/dislikes, etc.. It isn't about making them buy, it is about finding out what THEY want.
It takes awhile to get comfortable but if we are relaxed, our clients will be relaxed. I do say, at the end of the group close because I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable I say...so if there is really nothing you want today, just bring me your profile card when it is your turn and you can just say, "thank you, I had fun today :)" .
I don't want anyone ever to feel as if I pushed them into buying the product and then getting buyers remorse. It is truly about getting them what they want.

Another Question
I was asked with the economy the way it is, has it effected my sales? Surprisingly enough, the answer is "no". I have been very consistent for several years. I still sell a lot of roll ups when I do appointments but they usually tend to be the 4 pocket "Princess of Quite A Lot" as opposed to the 6 Pocket "Queen of Everything". I have always liked this approach because it is a great place to start and then the client can continue to add products and see the improvements as she adds new products.
Have a Great Weekend Everyone!!

When does a new consultant have to order?
One of our readers asked:
I have a question I have been trying to get answered. What happens if I don't have a debut party or turn in an order within my first two months? I became a consultant, the end of July 2010. My director says we have to turn in an order of 600 wholesale by the end of August. I have been sick and haven't really done anything with the business since I got my starter kit. For various reasons I don't think I will be ready to have a debut party until Early September and doubt I can make 1200 retail.
Nothing bad happens. If your recruiter is trying to have you count as a qualified team member, well that will work against her but should not be a reason for you to place an order if you are not ready and you don't mind giving up any of the "free" bonuses the Company offers for doing your initial product order of $600 w/s or more the month you join or the following month. If you have decided you want some product but aren't ready to do $600+ , as long as you select $400 retail, you will receive the 50% discount. Just remember, if you end up placing a total of $600 wholesale in the first two months as a consultant, the amounts do not cumulative to a $600 for the free product bonuses. To receive the bonuses, the order must be all at once.
Once you submit your agreement you have up to a year to place a minimum $200 w/s to maintain your status as a consultant. For all intensive purposes a consultant "terms" in the 6 month with no product order but all that is required to reinstate is simply to place a $400 rt/ $200 w/s. As long as at least one minimum order is placed a year, one never has to sign another agreement.
I hope this helps to answer your questions and if it doesn't, please keep asking in the comments and I will do my best to further clarify!
Welcome to Mary Kay!

Organizing Referrals & Leads
This is something I have struggled with in the past so I wanted to share how I have managed to keep my leads and referrals organized instead of playing the pile up until you throw them away game. Hope this information is helpful for someone.
When using the backside of the profile cards, where you clients can list the names of up to five friends of ladies they think would be interested in Mary Kay, a desk can become a little disorganized if the profile cards aren't filed alphabetically be the clients name but if we file them, then it makes it difficult to remember who may have given you referrals, so what to do?? (If you are giggling because it doesn't seem like a chore... then it is only because there isn't enough profile cards to be worried about. When working and seeing enough faces this can get overwhelming if you want to be good at follow up.
Making sure you have your client's name on the top of the backside of the profile card, simply make a photocopy of it. Then the profile card can be filed appropriately and the photocopy can be put in a 3 ring binder to be kept nice and organized, when using a 8 x 11 page of paper, there is room under the profile card for notes on the contacts.
For leads obtained from a fair, drawing, or the little info cards, organization and follow up can also become quite a chore as well - I use a scrapbook (because the pages are firmer) but even just a spiral 3 subject notebook works great. Simply tape the slip to a page in the notebook. There will be plenty of space to the right of the slip to write notes as you attempt to make your contacts. I use the subjects based on whether the lead is interested in a facial, a party, or Company information. Once the contact is made and the appointment booked or the lead is no longer interested, the slip can be removed from the book.
The other nice thing about this system is: if you are going to be some place with plenty of time and nothing to do, we can just grab the notebook and take it with us!
If we take the time to get the lead, it is smart to follow up. I am guilty myself of having so many leads that I haven't gotten to that after I get sick of looking at them and feeling guilty that I haven't contacted them yet and too embarrassed to contact them because of the time lag, I have just thrown them in the garbage, and that... is NOT good for future business or my image as a professional that follows up on a contact. That is when I came up with this system and it has helped me tremendously.
Hope this helps!!

Well, talk about a Cult... this is unbelievable!
(The Photo is of the Patriot Guard Riders) *********************************************************************************************
This is sad, I can't believe I had not heard about this group before now....If you haven't I would like to make you aware of a group that I had no clue existed or how they can call themselves a church with the messages they are sending... It is called the Westboro Baptist Church. (I have heard about groups that protest at military funerals, just wasn't aware that they were an organized group calling themselves a church. (I believe their memo of protests said they were to be in Missouri on the 7th for some protests)
( I have removed names and location but this was a memo put out by their church to protest at a funeral of a Marine killed in battle.

GOD HATES AMERICA & IS KILLING
OUR TROOPS IN HIS WRATH.
Military funerals have become pagan orgies of
idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the
dunghill gods of Sodom & play taps to a fallen fool.
This message to be preached in respectful, lawful proximity
to the memorial of a fallen Marine, time and place listed.
Marine gave his life for the Constitutional right of WBC to
warn America. To deny us our First Amendment rights is to declare to the
world that Marine died in vain, and that America is a nation of
sodomite hypocrites.
I can't understand how people could do this to the family of a lost one and have no conscious for the anguish they are causing.
The good new is if group has the right to assemble, so does others... so thank God for this group
“Except the Lord build the house, They labor in vain that build it;
Except the Lord keep the city, The watchman waketh but in vain.”
Psa. 127:1.
The Lord no longer builds the American house; nor does the Lord
watch over and protect America. These soldiers are dying for
the homosexual and other sins of America. God is now
America’s enemy, and God Himself is fighting against America.
THANK GOD FOR IEDs. (improvised explosive devices, btw- I had to find out what it meant so I shared.)
my last wonder...why aren't all other Baptists church screaming in protest that the name "Baptist" is being used in this horrific behavior and they don't want to be associated with that group, so the group should change their name????
**************************
(still shaking head)in disbelief but in doing more research I found a bright spot...
The Patriot Guard Riders attend the funerals of members of the United States Armed Forces at the invitation of the deceased’s family.
The group was initially formed to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality. The Patriot Guard positions itself to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters' chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines.
Although initially founded by motorcyclists, the organization is open to anyone, regardless of political affiliation, veteran status, or whether they ride or not. The only prerequisite is "a deep respect for those who serve our country; military, firefighters, or law enforcement". The Patriot Guard was established in Mulvane, Kansas at American Legion Post 136 in 2005.
The group's mission quickly expanded to include the funerals of law enforcement officers, fire department personnel, all first responders, and any active duty member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces from all previous wars and conflicts and is now largely focused on recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of fallen service members as well as their families and loved ones. As of April 28, 2008, the group reported over 170,000 members. In addition to their attendance at funerals, the group also greets troops returning from overseas at welcome home celebrations, deployment ceremonies, and perform volunteer work for veteran's organizations such as Veterans Homes. The group also assists families in financial difficulties with travel and housing arrangements, and also visits military hospitals to encourage and honor wounded service members of the United States Armed Forces.
Now if someone was looking for a cause to take down because of the evil they do...might I suggest this one is perhaps more hateful and hurtful than any I have every seen!

This Just Made My Day
Almost none MK related... but I felt so good after, I just had to share... I had run to the grocery store and after checking out the cashier said, "I think this is your cucmber" and handed it to me, I got my wallet and she said, "no you paid for it", I thought about it and looked at my receipt and waited for her to finish ringing the couple that went thru in back of me to pay her because it had not been paid for. Finished loading my car and returned the cart when I notice an elderly woman with a cane (in 90+ weather) returning her empty cart. I hastened my pace and offered to do it for her. She thanked me, and I smiled and told her to have a great day. As I was starting to get into my car, I heard a voice. (I was unaware I had had an audience) - an elderly gentleman (the one who was in line with his wife in back of me) said....
Young lady.. (okay that was enough of a reward because I definetely fall into the "old hen") you have just restored my faith in humanity. In under two minutes I just witnessed an act of honesty and and act of kindness, it is no surprise that you are driving that pink cadillac because if you treat strangers that good, I can only imagine how well you treat those you know.. You are a special lady!!!
no, I didn't not go into a booking script or make anyone take my card. I thanked him for making my day and went smiling on my way feeling like a million bucks.
Now how cool is that?

the DIY issue
I see a lot of snarky comments in, ah, certain locations about a MK facial or pedicure being "less than" because it's essentially a guided DIY.
I see a lot of women over there going on about their expensive facials and pedicures that they pay others to do at salons.
Well, if you have that kind of money and spare time, that's fabulous, but it behooves you to remember that many women do not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing your own beauty rituals affordably and enjoying the experience. And there is *certainly* nothing wrong with learning how to take care of your own skin using high quality MK products. Your MK consultant brings quality products and experiences to your home that you might otherwise not be able to enjoy.
I sure don't have a problem with that.

I'm Still around 2
Hey all,
Just thought I would mention that I am still here as well. Thought a new look for the site would be nice and got the comments working again.
I also noticed that we can now add pages to the blog and I think I would like to start working on that. I think that there are some crucial points that we (try to) make over and over again and having those easily accessible would be great.
Please let me know what kinds of "pages" you would like to see. For instance, "Is Mary Kay a pyramid scheme?" would possibly be a good page.
As always, thanks for your participation and please make any suggestions. With 90 readers, I would think someone out there might want to be a contributing author. Any takers?

I'm still around
Sorry I've been absent, ppl. I've been going through a nasty breakup, with still the 3 jobs to handle, and new relationships to negotiate.
Mr. Gothboy is HISTORY. Can't deal with that mess any more. >:P Can't, won't, finito.
Saving money for the move. Looking for a rental house with my piercer and her teenage daughter. Did a lot of house hunting over the weekend; have some contenders. I hate moving but can't wait until I'm settled in the new place, away from all the negativity and bitterness.

Staying intouch
Hello Balanced Buddies!! I don't want to loose all our readers from boredom but I have a super busy weekend and then getting ready for Seminar so the next week or so the posts may be a little sparse. I will do my best to come up with something interesting and of course after I get back from Seminar you will have some fun stuff to read. I would love your input.. Either privately email me or post a comment here - what are some topics/subject, etc... that you would like to see?
For anyone newer to MK or looking at MK - I do stronger recommended building a strong customer base and then build your team. Mary Kay always said book, sell, book, recruit.... she didn't say, book recruit, recruit, recruit... if you are in MK to make "full time money" you will have to be working with both aspects but the sales should come first. 50% of a sale will put more money in your pocket than 4,9, or 13% of the order from a team member, especially if they are only joining for personal use. Once you have a client, make sure you take good care of them..
Last night while I was busy doing several things at one time none MK, I received two calls - one I was able to take the other one went to voice mail.... 2 reorders from clients.... total was almost $300 retail....I don't care who you are or how long you have been in MK, that there is still exciting!! (I am talking about a 10 minute time frame). So an important part of this business is always cherish your clients.
Seriously, I truly enjoy my clients and I know they appreciate me.. the other night one of my clients wanted to stop by and check out the new colors. When she arrived... she said I have a little something for you.... while on a trip she a found a quaint little gift shop and said when she saw this she just had to buy it for me. In a beautiful little gift bag, I unwrapped the cutest pin (elegant) with a little lipstick, nail polish, mirror, and heart on it.. very nicely done.. and then a little laminated card... she said to me, I think they wrote it for you... .... . can I even begin to explain how great that made me feel? as Mary Kay always said, no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care..... so remember, always try to treat others as you would like to be treated..
The Card said... A MARY KAY CONSULTANT
...God bless my Mary Kay Consultant who does more than give a facial.
She dotes upon her clients and makes them feel special, goes the extra mile in pleasing customers, Appreciates the business they happily refer. She always
hands out samples and has a smile to share.. Loves to book home parties in her
leather calendar..
She's a consultant for your beauty, an angel in disguise, she's an Mary Kay

Mineral Powder Eye/Cheek Colors
I believe I have written an article on this before but I read a post from one of our readers and just wanted to point out really quickly.... I absolutely love the new mineral powder line and my sales are higher than they have ever been. I believe the first reason is there has been so much marketing and advertising from all companies (not just mk) about "mineral this" and "mineral that" and how wonderful they are, I was beginning to loose clients to other brands until we launched ours.
Also the younger generation is definitely interested in the mineral line, without this line we would have a very "aging" market.
Yes they are smaller than our previous line but (especially the eye shadows) the colors is more concentrated with more pigment so I actually do use less but the biggest reason for the size difference is in the former shape (oval at the one end) in order to have the color hold its shape and stay in the container, a filler was needed to retain shape. (I believe I read this both on intouch and in the Applause). In the new shape, the rectangles, a filler isn't required so basically it is all product.
I did have a few clients ask and I explained this to them and told them to give it a try but if they weren't 100% happy with the product, I would be happy to get them the former shapes or return their money. I also explained this to almost every client I had and they appreciate the information and know I care about them. I did not have one, not one and I have over 500 clients return a blush or an eye shadow because they didn't like it or felt it didn't last as well as the former. The majority of them even commented they "loved" the new mineral line. So, armed with info we can keep our clients informed and happy!!
P.s. the new colors are a super success!!

A little pricey!!
I really had to chuckle over this (I am being a little immature so forgive me, I am not perfect... but whenever I read the negative sites, they always carry on about how cheap the prizes the Company gives us are. So, would someone tell me when someone gets out of Mary Kay, the "cheap" prize that they (bought for $2,400) (rolling eyes) that they say isn't worth $20 now shows up on ebay for.. BIG $$$$$
Hubby was looking for something and saw this and had to show it to me because he thought I had one. Laughed so hard...So, it is not okay for a Company to take advantage of them, but it is okay for them to take advantage of others?? So is it worth it or not?
Here is the listing:
Mary Kay Star Prize 45th Aniversary Hot Pink Ring 7
Item condition: --
Time left: 19d 09h (Aug 02, 201008:35:16 PDT)
Price: US $399.99 Buy It NowBuy It Now
Don't miss that $399.00!!!!!!! ummm... can anyone go to the negative site that does the reviews and names prices for what they feel the star consultant prizes are worth and tell us what they felt the value of this ring was.
Kay Pink Prize Ring size 7 special for the 45th aniversary. Opens with special message. This is a rare collectors star prize item for anyone who loves MK. Picture does not due this one justice!

NSD Allison LaMarr to resign..
I know there is alot of talk about this subject in the MK world and even non MK world so I thought a post was warranted. I have no personal information as I do not know Allison. I also would like to add that whatever agreement that the Company and Allison came to will more than likely be kept confidential. There will be be plenty of speculation and rumors. Chances are we will never know the whole story.
Not that it is worth much but imho, I am sure Allison had reasons, just because a National resigned doesn't mean the Company is going under, doesn't mean others will be jumping ship. Think about it... she achieved alot and fast.. at 31 she has "attained" the highest position in MK. Perhaps she has decided it isn't her passion. Perhaps she has decided she doesn't care for it. Perhaps the Company worked out a deal with her so she can go and pursue her new passion. Perhaps she sees an opportunity that will supersede the monetary value she could earn as an NSD. Perhaps she just wanted to move on. What have the "balanced" people always said, Mary Kay is a business opportunity. It is not the be all, end all. Allison may feel she had achieved the goal and no longer felt challenge and wants to go build again. She is only 31. She has been extremely successful perhaps she wants to pursue something new and exciting to her.
Just as consultants and directors, nationals have terms and conditions to their nsd agreements, if Allison was in violation of any of these, the Company would have warned her. She would have the opportunity to agree to the terms she accepted as a national or she would have the right to move on.
As for the rumors of the Company changing the requirements for Nationals, I am pretty sure that any that have already achieved the position would be grandfathered, it would only effect the new and up and coming nationals. So the speculation of her jumping ship because she wouldn't qualify under the new requirements sound pretty silly to me.
Nationals are allowed to market other products but I am sure they have certain requirements to meet and perhaps her speaking tour would not allow her to meet these.
So she moved on, what's the big deal? She was successful in MK and now perhaps she will be successful in something else.
As for not making enough money, I believe the Applause reported over $11,000 and I am pretty sure she retained her unit (nsd's have this option) and those commissions are not reported (to my knowledge) in NSD commissions, now we all know that many directors can earn $2000- $10,000+ just in director commissions, so .. ummm.. not bad money in my opinion.
Whatever she chooses to do, I am sure she will be good at it. It amazes me how individuals can make such an incredibly big deal over it. People change positions all the time, even C.E.O.'s of Companies, etc... so an NSD resigned.. okay... ??
In the previous post.. Colleen left a few interesting comments regarding Allison, so if you haven't read them yet, take a minute a do so.
I am hope Allison will be fulfilled and happy in her new venture and I am sure she touched alot of lives during her stay in MK. As we all have heard, things are in our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. So to sum it up, possibly for Allison, Mary Kay was just a season, not a lifetime.
a little of Allison's bio:
Allison LaMarr started her Mary Kay business in May of 2003 and debuted as a Sales Director in February of ‘04. She started her Mary Kay career in pursuit of unlimited earning potential and a balanced life-style.
Before Mary Kay, Allison was in Marketing and Product Management for a Global Bank. In her first 12 months of business, she completely paid off her $30,000 in credit card debt, and in her first full year as a Director she earned over $100,000 more than her previous annual corporate income.
Allison has earned the use of four Mary Kay Career Cars and has been driving the prestigious Pink Cadillac since her 10th short month in the company! She is currently driving a $70,000 customized Pink Escalade with about every option that Cadillac makes! Allison was a Star Consultant every single quarter from signing her Beauty Consultant agreement until becoming a National.
Her amazing Consultants and Directors recently made history when they officially debuted as the LAMARR NATIONAL AREA, becoming the fastest National Area to ever debut in the company’s 45 year history.
Allison led her personal unit to the Million Dollar Club twice and was Queen of the Pearl Seminar in 2006, breaking multiple company records along the way. Allison’s highest combined earnings in one month have been in excess of $33,000!

Well, I guess most of us in MK Land realize our fiscal year ended June 30th @ 12:00 central time. All yearly items we track, return to zero - so it is time to start anew. A suggestion I have is not to just set another goal and dive forward in to it but to look at what you wanted to achieve last year, did you achieve it? Were you close to it? Did you track your progress through out the year or did you wait until the last minute and try to make up the better part of the year?
Whether or not you achieved the complete goal or not is not as important as if you consistently worked towards it. Goals are to have you looking forward - to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Ultimately having a goal and working towards it, will get you farther than working without a goal. It is just highly important to evaluate your actions and your results so that adjustments can be made if you have not chosen the best route to attain your goal. Goals are not evil. There is no shame in not achieving a goal as long as you put forth the effort.
When setting a goal, you want to make yourself stretch and grow if one sets a goal they know is "easy" to do, it really isn't a goal and no growth will be had. It is also wise to have a "larger" goal but have smaller ones as markers along the way, a way of tracking your journey. Looking like you achieved your goal and actually achieving it are not the same thing. Putting forth your best efforts but falling short of your goal is still something to stand tall and hold your head high about. Accepting praise for a goal you know did not actually obtain is going to result in a loss of self respect and self esteem. Which in turn will begin a downward spiral.
I set some big goals this year, I am pleased to have accomplished 2 out of the 3 of them. I would have been happier to have attained all three but .. hey.. I gave it a respectable try and faking it or buying it doesn't mean the goal was achieved. Had I not had any goals, I can assure you, I wouldn't have accomplished what I did.
I often explain to my unit that a large goal and smaller goals to measure progress are much like any of us going on a trip. If I wanted to go to Disney World and lived in Texas... I wouldn't jump in my car and just start driving (unless I had onstar, which I do, lol). I would have a plan, I would have a map, and I would have a route that I planned on taking to get there. Without these tools, I would aimlessly drive around and the chances are I would never make it to my destination. And that is kind of what Mary Kay (or just about anything in life) is like without a goal.
So I encourage everyone to set a goal - don't worry about how it compares to other's goals, make it your goal and then work towards it. Liken the smaller goals to rest stops or gas stations that you would have on your trip to Disney World.
I would love to hear from some of you on what your Mary Kay goal is.. but I also encourage you to work with goals in other areas of your life. I will share that my goal this year is Triple Star - that would be Court of Sales, Court of Sharing, and Unit Club.
In closing, always remember that "wishing" isn't going to make it happen - "working" will. Have a Great Day!

The Finish!!
Yes, it is the end of the month and the end of the Mary Kay year. Some may be wondering if I am posting less because I am sooo busy.... well the answer is "YES" - lol.... today I finished painting my dining room. two evening races this week.. cleaning house because family coming in from out of state, visiting two family members in the hospital, traveling to visit family over 10 hours away, finding tickets for our wedding anniversary trip.. oh that's right it is year end, I am not suppose to walk away from my desk, I am suppose to be stressed, sick, pulling out charge cards, borrowing family's social security numbers, praying, bargaining, selling my kids for extra money.... ummm...no - we will finish were we finish, if I don't like where I finish, I will just have to be willing to spend more time with my business next year -
Yes I am working too, but it is important to keep things in balance... I will work hard to finish but I will keep it in perspective and be proud of what I and my unit accomplish because we did it the "right" way.
For any considering Mary Kay... please know that we can have a life and our Mary Kay opportunity as well, it is not one or the other unless you, yourself set it up to be that way. Build a strong foundation and do it with real customers, real consultants and real money and it will all work they way it should... try cheating the system and you cheat yourself and the person that will be hurt the worst is YOU.
For those in Mary Kay wrapping up the month and the MK year! Have a Joyous June finish.

Product reviews: Orchid perfume and liquid lipcolors
OK! I got my box o goodies from MK4me. so it's review time!
Orchid fragrance: mmm. sweet, delicious, feminine, neither weak nor overpowering. The bottle is a generous size. Highly recommended.
Liquid lip colors: I got Royal Plum, Cherry Coffee, and Malted.
Really, I couldn't be happier! These look great, have very good pigment saturation, and feel buttery, not sticky or greasy. Also the colors are very flattering. Neither super warm nor super cool...pretty much "everyone can wear" colors. Cherry Coffee is a very wearable red. Suitable for work or evening. Royal Plum is deep, dark, and luxurious. If you're a goth, you really have to get it. Malted is a "nude" shade for natural looks. I wear colors like that when I model for my artists. I tried samples of raspberry ice and sherbet. Raspberry ice is a medium pink that I would classify as neutral toned. Not blueish, not orangey. A sweet and feminine shade. Sherbet is the only one I cannot wear as it is orange toned. It would work for warm skin tones.
Anyway...keep them in your purse all summer and have no fears of melted lippies!

Working your MK in the Summer ! ?
With kids out of school, folks going on vacation, and the heat, often it can be a little tougher getting a group together for skin care and color.... but.... in my unit we have been doing -Footsie Tootsie Parties & Sandals and Sandals parties & Peach Pedi Parties and get a great turnout. It is fun, relaxing, shorter than our parties and perfect for the summer. They can be held in the yard, on a patio, or in the house.
I purchased large dish pans at the dollar store and bought the glass stones (used in aquariums, vases, etc..... i put the stones in a fill up with water... when the feet are rubbed across the stones it is like getting a message. (to clean the stones, I put them in a cloth bag and put them in the dishwasher. With foot fizzies or the pedicure soak or sometimes even rose petals, I let the guests soak and do some talking about me, the Company, and some of our other products (this can also be a great time just to talk about the skin care line and even let them try it on their arm.. then I use the Satin Hands set - have them put the extra emollient night cream on (optional -they can slip their feet into plastic and then soak them in the warm water) or just put their feet back in the pan.. Then let everyone use the smoothie scrub..(or any of the sugar scrubs) rinse off and pat the feet dry with a towel bags- then I let the guest choose between the energizing foot and leg treatment, the peach or unscented hand cream, or one of our many lotions.
I ask about the part of the arm they tried the skin care on and then I mention all the different types of parties we can offer. Very, very often they want to book the skin care/color party in the fall.. and that is fine with me... I will need bookings in the fall too.
I do a little closing and then either let them snack as I close each guest individually (or they get the "peachie" goodies - or if it is a Sandals and Sundaes party.. I put out the ice cream and all the toppings so everyone can design their own Sundaes (I also have orange sherbet cups in case anyone has ice cream issues.
As everyone is making their sundaes, I also offer the toe separators and nail polish if there is anyone that would like to polish their toe nails.
This is so much fun and when I have done unit guest events, we have really packed the house every time and the sales have been great and bookings too.
Make it fun and people will book.. Enjoy the Summer!! -
